[Overview] This herb is also known as Bayuezha, Bayuezha, Bayuegao, and Bayueguo. It is the nearly mature fruit of plants in the Lardizabalaceae family: Akebia quinata (Thunb.) Decne., Akebia trifoliata (Thunb.) Koidz., or Akebia trifoliata (Thunb.) Koidz. var. australis (Diels) Rehd. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Hunan provinces. The fruit is harvested in summer and autumn when green-yellow, then sun-dried, or briefly blanched in boiling water before drying.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach, and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Soothes the Liver and regulates Qi, activates blood circulation and relieves pain, promotes urination, and kills parasites.

[Applications] 1. Used for Qi stagnation causing epigastric and hypochondriac pain, hernia, and testicular swelling and pain. For Liver Qi stagnation with epigastric and hypochondriac pain, it can be combined with Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu), Melia toosendan (Chuanlianzi), and Citrus aurantium (Zhike). For hernia pain and testicular swelling and pain, it is combined with Foeniculum vulgare root (Xiaolihui Xianggen), Citrus reticulata seed (Jihé), and Litchi seed (Lizhihe).
2. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea, traumatic swelling from fractures, and scrofula. For amenorrhea, combined with Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) and Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu). For traumatic swelling from fractures, combined with Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) and Sambucus (Jiegumu) for topical application. For scrofula with hard swelling and pain, often combined with Abutilon seed (Tiankuizi), Laminaria (Kombu), and Ostrea (Muli).
3. Used for difficult urination, combined with Plantago seed (Cheqianzi), Alisma (Zexie), and Akebia (Mutong).
4. Used externally for snake and insect bites and itching of the genital area; fresh herb is pounded and applied topically or decocted for washing.
Additionally, Fructus Akebiae Quinatae has the effect of tonifying the Kidney and strengthening the lumbar region; it can be decocted or soaked in wine for treating Kidney deficiency with lumbar pain.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or soaked in wine. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or decocted for washing.
