[Overview] This herb is also known as Senpi, Qinbaipi, and Cuomu Pi. It is the bark of branches or dried bark of plants from the Oleaceae family: Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance, Fraxinus chinensis Roxb., Fraxinus szaboana Lingelsh., or Fraxinus stylosa Lingelsh. It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Henan, with Sichuan and Hubei also producing it. The bark is harvested in spring and autumn, cut into sections, and sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter and astringent in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Large Intestine, Liver, and Gallbladder meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and dries dampness, detoxifies, brightens the eyes.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat dysentery and leukorrhea. For diarrhea, often combined with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), etc.; for dysentery, combined with Baishouweng (Pulsatillae Radix), Huanglian, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), etc., as in the formula Baishouweng Tang; for chronic dysentery, combined with Chuanpi (Aurantii Immaturus Pericarpium), Shiliupi (Punicae Cortex), etc.; for leukorrhea, often combined with Chuanpi and Huangbai.
2. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes caused by Liver meridian fire, and for eye cataracts. Can be used alone as a decoction for washing eyes or combined with Huanglian and Zhuyè (Lophatheri Herba).
Additionally, this herb is used for pediatric convulsions with fever, phlegm-heat cough and asthma, rheumatic arthralgia, and psoriasis.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted in water, 6–12 g. External use: appropriate amount, decoction used to wash eyes or juice applied to eyes.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Cortex Fraxini contains fraxin, fraxetin, fraxin glycoside, esculin, and eugenin.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Cortex Fraxini inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, and Escherichia coli; fraxin and fraxetin have anti-inflammatory effects and inhibit experimental arthritis; decoctions have antitussive and expectorant effects; fraxetin shows significant antiasthmatic activity by relaxing tracheal smooth muscle and antagonizing histamine; also exhibits sedative, anticonvulsant, analgesic, diuretic, and uric acid excretion-promoting effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Psoriasis: intramuscular injection of 50% Cortex Fraxini injection, 1 vial (2 ml) daily. In 20 cases, 9 cured, 3 markedly effective, 7 improved, 1 ineffective. [Clinical Dermatology Journal, 1982, (2):106] (2) Chronic conjunctivitis: treatment group used Cortex Fraxini eye drops, control group used gentamicin eye drops; 35 cases (70 eyes) observed over 20 days per course. The treatment group showed significantly better total efficacy than control (P<0.05); both groups improved symptoms of dry eyes, foreign body sensation, and itching, but the treatment group was significantly better in signs such as conjunctival papillae and follicles (P<0.05).
