[Overview] This herb is also known as Old Yadanzi, Bitter Hazel Seed, Yadanzi, and Small Chinaberry. It is the fruit of Brucea javanica (L.) Merr., a plant of the Simaroubaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, with Guangdong having the largest output and best quality. The fruit is harvested in autumn and winter when ripe, waiting until the peel turns black, then collected in batches, cleaned, and sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the Large Intestine and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and dries dampness, kills parasites and detoxifies, corrodes warts.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat dysentery with pus and blood in stools, tenesmus, especially suitable for chronic dysentery and convalescent dysentery. Often used alone wrapped in longan pulp for administration. In cases of exuberant heat toxin with abdominal pain and foul-smelling dysentery, it can be combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Paeonia lactiflora (Baishao), and Panax notoginseng (Sanqi), as in the formula Jiedu Shenghua Dan. Currently, this herb is widely used for amoebic dysentery and ulcerative colitis. For prolonged dysentery and diarrhea that is persistent and unhealed, it can be combined with Terminalia chebula (Hezi), Prunus mume (Wumei), and Aucklandia lappa (Muxiang).
Two cases resulted in 45 patients beginning necrosis and shedding after 3–5 days of treatment; 32 cases were cured after one course, 13 cases after two courses, and 4 cases after three courses, with a cure rate of 98%. [Chinese Journal of Practical Medicine, 2003, 3(11):973]
