[Overview] This herb is also known as Jihua, Ziwei Flower, Duotai Flower, Tengluo Flower. It is the flower of Campsis grandiflora (Thunb.) K.Schum or Campsis radicans (L.) Seem., plants of the Bignoniaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other regions. The flowers are harvested in summer and autumn when just opened, then sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste: pungent, sour; nature: cold. Channels entered: Liver, Pericardium.

[Actions] Breaks blood stasis and dissipates masses; cools the blood and dispels wind.

[Applications]
1. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea, abdominal pain during menstruation, irregular menstruation, and metrorrhagia. It can be used alone as a powder taken orally; or combined with Angelica sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius, Paeonia lactiflora, Corydalis yanhusuo, as in the formula Ziwei San (紫葳散). For more severe blood stasis, it can be combined with Sanleng and Ezhu.
2. Used for abdominal masses and traumatic injuries. For abdominal masses, it can be combined with Moutan Cortex and Trionyx shell, as in Biejia Jian Wan (鳖甲煎丸); for traumatic injuries, it is often combined with Boswellia and Myrrha.
3. Used for blood-heat causing generalized itching, scabies, and hidden rashes. It can be taken as a powder mixed with wine or decocted with Cicadae Periostracum, Tribulus terrestris, Rehmanniae Radix, Paeonia lactiflora, Moutan Cortex, etc.; it can also be combined with Realgar, Coptis, Arisaema and applied externally as a powder.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically or decocted for washing.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of qi and blood deficiency without blood stasis or heat, and in pregnancy.

1. Chemical constituents: Flos Campsis contains apiin and β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: The aqueous decoction of Flos Campsis inhibits contraction of porcine coronary artery strips; significantly inhibits thrombosis formation in animals; and has inhibitory effects on Shigella flexneri and Salmonella typhi.
