[Overview] This herb is also known as Yili Jindan, Wild Corydalis, Prostrate Corydalis Rhizome, and Falling Water Pearl. It is the tuber of Corydalis decumbens (Thunb.) Pers., a plant of the Papaveraceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangxi province, with occurrences also in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces. The tubers are harvested in spring or early summer after sprouting, with residual stems and fibrous roots removed, then washed clean of soil. They can be used fresh or dried.
[Properties] Bitter and slightly pungent in taste, with a cool nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Dispel wind and eliminate dampness, activate blood circulation and unblock collaterals, lower blood pressure.
[Applications] 1. Used to dispel wind for conditions such as wind-damp bi syndrome, joint pain, hemiplegia after stroke, sequelae of poliomyelitis in children, lumbar dampness and muscle strain. Often ground into powder and taken orally, or combined with other wind-dispelling and collateral-unblocking analgesic herbs. 2. Used for hypertension, can be combined with Gou Teng (Uncaria), Tian Ma (Gastrodia), Sang Bai Pi (Morus bark), and Xia Ku Cao (Prunella). Additionally, this herb can be used for traumatic injuries and bruises.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: powder, 6–12 g, taken in divided doses three times daily.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The tuber contains alkaloids including corydaline, corydalmine, bicuculline, stepholidine, berberine, α-allocryptopine, protopine, α-tetrahydropalmatine, oripavine, corynoline, and new alkaloids of Corydalis decumbens. 2. Pharmacological effects: Alkaloids from Corydalis decumbens increase coronary artery blood flow, reduce peripheral vascular resistance, and lower blood pressure; oripavine directly relaxes animal ileum smooth muscle; the alkaloids stimulate isolated rabbit duodenum and significantly excite isolated rat uterus; corynoline induces animal states of catalepsy, drowsiness, and muscle rigidity; total alkaloids exhibit anti-platelet aggregation and anticoagulant effects. 3. Clinical reports: (1) Juvenile myopia: Corydalis decumbens eye drops, 4 drops each morning and afternoon daily for 60 days; among 141 eyes treated, 27 cured, 62 improved, 40 unchanged, 12 worsened, total effective rate 63.1%. [Hebei Medical Journal, 1980, (2):56] (2) Acute and chronic lumbar sprain: Corydalis decumbens injection (1 ml contains 1 mg alkaloids) injected locally at tender points, 4–6 ml per case once daily for 5 days per course, combined with brief massage after injection; among 46 cases treated (32 acute sprains: 28 cured, 4 markedly effective; 14 chronic sprains: 5 cured, 9 markedly effective).
