[Overview] This herb is also known as Licang, Hanlian Cao, Mo Cao, and Shui Hanlian. It is the aerial part of Eclipta prostrata L., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is widely distributed throughout most regions of China, mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Hubei provinces. Harvested in summer and autumn, the herb is cut, washed to remove soil and impurities, then dried in shade or sun.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and sour; nature: cold. Enters the liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies liver and kidney, cools the blood, and stops bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for dizziness, blurred vision, premature graying of hair, loose teeth, hair loss, soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees caused by liver and kidney yin deficiency. Particularly suitable for yin deficiency with heat signs. Often combined with Ligustrum lucidum (Nv Zhen Zi), as in the Er Zhi Wan formula. For severe dizziness and blurred vision, additional herbs such as Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Di), Cuscuta chinensis (Tu Si Zi), Dioscorea opposita (Huai Shan Yao), and Gastrodia elata (Tian Ma) may be added; for dry eyes and blurred vision, add Lycium barbarum (Gou Qi Zi), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Buddleja officinalis (Mi Meng Hua), and Cassia tora (Jue Ming Zi); for premature graying and hair loss, add Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) and black soybeans (Ma Liao Hei Dou); for loose teeth and toothache, the herb can be used alone as a powder or combined with Fructus Chebulae (Qing Guo) and green salt (Qing Yan) as a powder for topical application to the teeth.
2. Used for bleeding syndromes caused by yin deficiency with vigorous fire injuring the blood vessels. For hematemesis and epistaxis, it can be combined with Biota orientalis leaves (Ce Bai Ye), Imperata cylindrica root (Bai Mao Gen), Bletilla striata (Bai Ji), and Rheum palmatum (Da Huang); for hemoptysis, combined with donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao), Cortex Lycii Radicis (Di Gu Pi), Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di), and Rubia cordifolia (Qian Cao); for hematuria and painful urination with blood, often combined with Plantago asiatica (Che Qian Cao), small and large thistles (Xiao Ji, Da Ji), and Imperata cylindrica root (Mao Gen); for bloody dysentery, combined with Portulaca oleracea (Ma Chi Xian), Pulsatilla chinensis (Bai Tou Weng), Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian), and Paeonia lactiflora (Bai Shao). Currently used for thrombocytopenic purpura and retinal hemorrhage.
Additionally, this herb is used for sores, ulcers, skin infections, and anal fistula, both internally and externally.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; can be made into paste, juice, pills, or powder.
External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically, powdered and boiled, or crushed into fluff and inserted into the nose.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and kidney yang deficiency with cold signs.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains nicotine, apigenin, luteolin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, ecliptalide, demethyl ecliptalide-7-O-glucoside, α-trithienylmethanol, acetate of (α-trithienyl)methanol, ecliptaldehyde, as well as stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, phytosterols, and β-amyrin.
2. Pharmacological effects: Herb Ecliptae exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella sonnei, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; its benzene, acetone, petroleum ether, and 50% ethanol extracts protect against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury; it significantly enhances nonspecific and cellular immunity but has little effect on humoral immunity; its water-soluble extract significantly inhibits cyclophosphamide-induced micronucleus formation in mouse polychromatic erythrocytes, indicating protective effects against chromosomal damage; it increases coronary artery flow and improves T wave on ECG in isolated guinea pig hearts; leaf powder applied to bleeding sites with slight pressure has good hemostatic effects.
3. Clinical reports: For coronary heart disease and angina pectoris, oral administration of Hanlian Cao extract, 15 g twice daily (equivalent to 30 g raw herb), for one month per course. In 30 cases observed, 15 showed marked effect, 14 improved, and 1 was ineffective. [Tianjin Medical Journal, 1986, 14(8):490]
