[Overview] This herb is also known as Sour Lantern, Sour Grass, Lantern Grass, and Wild Pepper. It is the calyx or fruit-bearing calyx of Physalis alkekengi L. var. franchetii (Makino) of the Solanaceae family. It is produced in North China, Central China, South China, and Southwest China. The fruit is harvested in autumn when the secondary calyx turns red or orange-red, then dried.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung meridian.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, benefits the throat, transforms phlegm, promotes urination.
[Applications] 1. Used for sore throat due to heat toxin, hoarseness, or cough with phlegm-heat.
