[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Flos Lonicerae contains chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid, ginkgolide, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and volatile oils. Lonicera hypoglauca flowers contain chlorogenic acid. The related species Lonicera fulvotomentosa flower buds contain fulvotomentoside A, α-hederin, sapindoside B, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin, and volatile oils.
2. Pharmacological effects: Honeysuckle infusion and decoction have broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus, meningococcus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and other pathogens. The decoction also inhibits influenza virus, enterovirus, herpes virus, Coxsackie virus, echovirus, and leptospira, suppressing viral replication and delaying virus-induced cytopathic effects. Honeysuckle extracts have anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects; reduce intestinal cholesterol absorption in rats and lower plasma cholesterol levels; ethanol extracts show anti-early pregnancy effects; aqueous and alcoholic extracts exhibit significant cytotoxicity against mouse sarcoma S180 and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.
3. Clinical reports: Leptospirosis—an injection prepared from honeysuckle and Centipeda minima (each ml containing 1 g and 2 g of crude drug respectively) was administered intravenously at 250 ml daily, combined with oral decoctions of both herbs (30 g and 40 g respectively). Fifty-five cases were treated, all cured after 3 to 12 days of treatment. [Zhong Yi Za Zhi, 1984, (8):48]
