[Overview] This herb is also known as Mao Gen, Mao Cao Gen, Tian Cao Gen, and Di Jin. It is the rhizome of Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv. var. major (Nees) C.E. Hubb., a member of the Poaceae family. It is produced throughout China, with higher yields in the North China region. The rhizomes are harvested in spring and autumn by digging up, removing the aerial parts and scale-like leaf sheaths, washing clean, bundling, and drying in the sun.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Bladder meridians.
[Actions] Cools the blood and stops bleeding; clears heat and promotes urination.
[Applications]
1. Used for bleeding due to blood heat; can be used alone or combined with other blood-cooling and hemostatic herbs. For hemoptysis and epistaxis caused by Lung fire injuring the network vessels, often combined with Biota leaf (Ce Bai Ye), Lithospermum (Zi Zhu), and Mulberry root bark (Sang Bai Pi). For cough with blood due to yin deficiency, combined with Rehmannia (Sheng Di), Lotus rhizome node (Ou Jie), and Small thistle (Xiao Ji). For vomiting blood due to Stomach heat, combined with Large thistle (Da Ji), Rubia (Qian Cao), and Rhubarb (Da Huang). For hematuria and painful urination due to heat scorching the Bladder, combined with Small thistle (Xiao Ji), Cattail pollen (Pu Huang), and Gardenia (Zhi Zi).
2. Used for stranguria, difficult urination, edema, and jaundice. For hot stranguria and bloody stranguria, often combined with Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi), Lophatherum (Dan Zhu Ye), and Gardenia (Zhi Zi). For difficult urination and edema, can be used alone as a decoction or combined with Poria (Fu Ling), Alisma (Ze Xie), and Akebia (Mu Tong). Currently used for treating acute and chronic nephritis with good efficacy. For damp-heat jaundice, combined with Artemisia capillaris (Yin Chen), Japanese knotweed (Hu Zhang), Lysimachia (Jin Qian Cao), and Rhubarb (Da Huang).
3. Used for Stomach heat causing thirst, vomiting, and hiccup. Can be used fresh as a decoction to replace tea, and is often included in compound formulas. For warm disease with exuberant qi-level heat and fluid injury causing thirst, often combined with Gypsum (Shi Gao), Anemarrhena (Zhi Mu), and Reed rhizome (Lu Gen). For wasting-thirst due to Stomach fire injuring fluids, combined with Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), Kudzu root (Ge Gen), and Rehmannia (Sheng Di Huang). For Stomach heat causing rebellious qi with persistent vomiting and hiccup, combined with Bamboo shavings (Zhu Ru), Reed rhizome (Lu Gen), and Tangerine peel (Ju Pi).
4. Used for Lung heat cough and asthma, often combined with Mulberry root bark (Sang Bai Pi), as in the formula Rushen Tang.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; fresh herb 30–60 g; or crushed and juiced for drinking. Mostly used raw; for hemostasis, charred.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains imperanene, imperatorin, coixol, ptaquiloside, saponins, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, carbohydrates, as well as citric acid, oxalic acid, and malic acid.
2. Pharmacological actions: Imperata rhizome significantly shortens bleeding and coagulation times; its aqueous decoction has diuretic effects in normal rabbits and water-loaded mice; it significantly enhances phagocytic function of mouse peritoneal macrophages; the decoction shows mild inhibitory effects on Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Acute nephritis: Fresh Imperata rhizome 800 g (dried 500 g), decocted to 1000 ml, divided doses, one dose daily. Treated 40 cases with a total effective rate of 97.5%. [Journal of Anhui College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1994, (3):27] (2) Chyluria: Imperata rhizome 100 g, Houttuynia cordata 60 g, Plantago herb 60 g (all fresh), decocted to 1000 ml, taken as tea substitute, one dose daily. Treated 12 cases, cured 6, improved 6, total effective. [Hunan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987, 3(5):55] (3) Purpura lichenoid dermatitis: Imperata rhizome decoction (Imperata rhizome 90 g, Rehmannia 30 g, Agrimony and charred lotus rhizome node 10 g each, 4 jujubes, decocted), oral administration, one dose daily. Treated 30 cases, cured 16, markedly effective 6, improved 6, ineffective 2, total effective rate 93.3%. [Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, 7(7):298]
