[Overview] This herb is also known as Longyan, Guiyuan, Bimu, and Lizhinu. It is the aril of Dimocarpus longan Lour., a plant of the Sapindaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangxi, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in clusters when ripe in summer and autumn, then dried by baking or sun-drying. The fruit peel is removed, and the aril is peeled off and sun-dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies the Heart and Spleen, nourishes the blood, and calms the spirit.

[Applications]
1. Used for palpitations and anxiety due to deficiency of both Heart and Spleen and insufficient qi and blood, as well as insomnia and forgetfulness. It can be used alone or combined with ginseng, astragalus, angelica, sour jujube seed, etc., as in the formula Guipi Tang (归脾汤). For yin and blood deficiency with irritability and poor sleep, it is combined with rehmannia root, lily bulb, sour jujube seed, and biota seed. For qi and yin deficiency with insomnia and excessive dreaming, it is combined with codonopsis and prepared rehmannia.
2. Used for spleen qi deficiency causing excessive menstrual bleeding, metrorrhagia, or bloody stools due to loss of control. Often combined with astragalus and atractylodes. For women with qi and blood deficiency causing irregular menstruation and abdominal pain during menstruation, it can be stewed with safflower.
Longan aril is an excellent tonic for regulating and supplementing qi and blood. It is suitable for elderly debilitated individuals, postpartum, or after serious illness with qi and blood deficiency. 1. Chemical constituents: The dried aril contains glucose, sucrose, organic acids, adenine, choline, proteins, fats, vitamins B1, B2, P, and C. The seeds contain 2-amino-4-methyl-5-hexynoic acid, 2-amino-4-hydroxymethyl-5-hexynoic acid, and 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-heptynoic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Due to its rich nutritional components such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, niacin, calcium, phosphorus, and iron, longan aril has tonic and strengthening effects. The combined extract of longan aril and gecko shows significant protective effects in mice exposed to cold, heat, and hypoxia, indicating anti-stress properties. The aqueous extract of longan aril inhibits Trichophyton mentagrophytes in vitro. The decoction inhibits Shigella bacteria.
