[Overview] This herb is also known as Bat Bean Root, Northern Mountain Bean Root, and Mountain Bean Root. It is the rhizome of Menispermum dauricum DC., a plant of the Menispermaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, and other regions. The rhizomes are harvested in spring and autumn, cleaned of soil and impurities, washed, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature, with slight toxicity. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves pain, kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used for sore throat, mammary abscess, throat wind (acute throat inflammation), cough, and mumps. Commonly combined with Belamcanda chinensis (Shegan), Scrophularia ningpoensis (Xuanshen), and Lonicera japonica (Yinhua). For acute throat wind with phlegm and qi stagnation causing difficulty swallowing, it can be used with this herb plus Bletilla striata (Baiyaozi) and Achyranthes bidentata (Tuniuxi). For lung-heat cough, it can be combined with Fritillaria cirrhosa (Chuanbeimu), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), and Platycodon grandiflorus (Jiegeng). For mumps, it can be combined with Isatis indigotica root (Banlangen) and Forsythia suspensa (Lianqiao).
2. Used for damp-heat jaundice, diarrhea, and dysentery. For damp-heat jaundice, it can be combined with Artemisia capillaris (Yinchenghao), Gardenia jasminoides (Zhizi), and Rheum palmatum (Dahuang). For damp-heat diarrhea and dysentery, it is suitable to combine with Cynanchum paniculatum (Xuchangqing) and Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically; or decocted water for soaking and washing.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: Contains dauricine (Bat Bean Root alkaloid), daurisoline, dauriporphine, protopine, menisperine, menispermine, stepharine, N-desmethylstepharine, menispermine, magnoflorine, and qingteng alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological Effects: The fat-soluble total alkaloids, polyphenolic hydroxyl alkaloids, and menispermine from Rhizoma Menispermi inhibit common respiratory pathogens such as Haemophilus influenzae, especially showing significant effects against Streptococcus pneumoniae. The crude total alkaloids and polyphenolic hydroxyl alkaloids inhibit inflammatory exudation and proliferation and modulate immune responses, possibly due to corticosteroid-like effects. Total alkaloids from Rhizoma Menispermi show good antagonistic effects on animal models of arrhythmia induced by aconitine, digitalis glycosides, chloroform adrenaline, and potassium chloride, effectively reversing various types of arrhythmias caused by ectopic rhythms or conduction blocks. The contained qingteng alkaloid dilates blood vessels, reduces peripheral vascular resistance, and has antitussive effects.
3. Clinical Reports: 1) Cardiac Arrhythmia: Tablets made from dauricine extracted from Rhizoma Menispermi (each tablet containing 50 mg) were administered at 6 tablets per dose, three times daily, treating 46 cases with an overall efficacy rate of about 90%, including 82% marked effectiveness, 96% effectiveness for premature beats, best efficacy for ventricular premature beats, and lower efficacy for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. The filtrate was used to wet gauze and applied hot (about 60°C) to the affected area for 30 minutes. The remaining decoction was reheated the next day for another hot application.
