[Overview] This herb is also known as Haizishen and Tongshen. It is the tuberous root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm., a plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, and other provinces. It is harvested in summer when most of the stems and leaves have withered, then washed ten times, the fibrous roots removed, briefly blanched in boiling water, and dried in the sun or dried directly.

[Properties] Sweet and slightly bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Spleen and Lung meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen, moistens the Lung and generates fluids.

[Applications] Qi deficiency:
1. Used for poor appetite and fatigue caused by Spleen Qi deficiency; can be combined with Astragalus (Huangqi), Codonopsis (Dangshen), Atractylodes (Baizhu), etc. If Spleen and Stomach deficiency is accompanied by Stomach Yin deficiency with dry mouth and constipation, it can be combined with Dioscorea (Shanyao), Dendrobium (Shihu), Ophiopogon (Maidong), etc. For Qi deficiency with unstable exterior and spontaneous sweating with deficiency heat, it can be combined with raw Astragalus (Sheng Huangqi), floating wheat (Fuxiaomai), Patrinia (Baiwei), Artemisia (Qinghao), etc.
2. Used for Lung deficiency with dry cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath; can be combined with Glehnia (Shashen), Lily (Baihe), Fritillaria (Beimu), etc.
3. Used in the late stage of warm diseases with injury to Qi and fluids, internal heat and thirst; can be combined with Rehmannia (Sheng Dihuang), Anemarrhena (Zhimu), Ophiopogon (Maidong), etc.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Radix Pseudostellariae contains palmitic acid, linoleic acid, 1-linoleoylglycerol, 2-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, β-sitosterol. It also contains fructose, various amino acids, trace element manganese, and Pseudostellaria cyclic peptides A and B.
2. Pharmacological effects: Radix Pseudostellariae has a significant stimulatory effect on lymphocyte proliferation.
3. Clinical reports: Congestive heart failure—using Radix Pseudostellariae, Salvia (Danshen), Descurainia (Tinglizi), and Plantago seed (Cheqianzi), each 30 g, decocted and taken 1–2 doses daily; after symptom relief, 1 dose every 2–3 days.
