[Overview] This herb is also known as Chifu, Chishitu, and Hongtu. It is a silicate mineral belonging to the hydrated kaolinite group, specifically hydrated halloysite (Halloysite). It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Fujian, and Hubei provinces. It can be mined year-round. After extraction, impurities such as stones and soil are removed, and the red, slippery, fat-like lumps are selected for medicinal use.
[Properties] Bitter, sour, astringent in taste; warm in nature. Enters the Large Intestine and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Astringes the intestines, stops bleeding, stops leukorrhea, absorbs dampness, and promotes wound contraction.
[Applications]
1. Used for chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, and rectal prolapse, especially suitable for those with deficiency cold and prolapse. Often used together with Yuyuliang (Semen Coicis), as in the formula Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (赤石脂禹余粮汤). For deficiency cold diarrhea, often combined with dried ginger and polished rice, as in Taohua Tang (桃花汤). For chronic dysentery with qi and blood deficiency, lower abdominal dull pain, and pale complexion, it can be combined with Codonopsis, Atractylodes, Aconite, dried ginger, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell, as in Da Taohua Tang (大桃花汤). For chronic diarrhea with anal prolapse, it can also be combined with Alum and Fulonggan.
2. Used for metrorrhagia and hematochezia, especially suitable for deficiency cold bleeding. Mild cases can be treated alone or combined with Psoralea; severe cases can be combined with Cuttlefish Bone and Dragon Grass, as in Chishizhi San (赤石脂散). In modern clinical practice for gastrointestinal bleeding, it is often combined with Bletilla and Panax notoginseng to enhance hemostatic effects. This herb can also be used for external traumatic bleeding.
3. Used for leukorrhea, nocturnal emission, and enuresis. For prolonged vaginal discharge due to deficiency of the vaginal channel, it can be combined with Cuttlefish Bone; for nocturnal emission, combined with Alpinia oxyphylla and Cuscuta; for enuresis or urinary incontinence, combined with Oyster Shell, as in Muli Wan (牡蛎丸).
4. Used for chronic non-healing ulcers, burns, and eczema. For long-term suppurative ulcers, it can be astringent combined with Dragon Bone, Gypsum, Dragon’s Blood, and Frankincense, ground into a fine powder and applied to the wound, as in Shengji San (生肌散). For damp eczema with exudation, prickly heat, and itchy sores, it can be combined with Phellodendron, Borneol, wax tea powder, and flour, ground finely and used as a dusting powder. For burns, combined with Rhubarb and Hydrous Calcium Sulfate in equal parts, ground into powder and applied.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–12 g, crushed and decocted first; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and sprinkled or applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases with damp-heat accumulation; use with caution during pregnancy.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include hydrated aluminum silicate [Al4(Si4O10)(OH)8·4H2O], also containing considerable iron oxide (Fe2O3) and other substances. Composition: silicon 42.93%, aluminum 36.58%, ferrous oxide (FeO) 4.85%, manganese 4.85%, magnesium and calcium 0.94%, moisture 14.75%. Additionally contains trace elements such as titanium, nickel, strontium, and barium.
2. Pharmacological effects: Red Halloysite contains a large amount of aluminum silicate; oral administration can adsorb toxins in the digestive tract such as phosphorus, mercury, bacterial toxins, and abnormal fermentation products and inflammatory exudates, and can cover the intestinal mucosa to reduce irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, thus exhibiting an adsorptive antidiarrheal effect. Red Halloysite preparation can significantly shorten coagulation time and bleeding time, showing a highly significant difference (P<0.01) compared with rhubarb and saline control groups.
3. Clinical reports: Chronic diarrhea—Red Halloysite 1000 g, Kufu (Alum) 1000 g, Tianxianzi (Herba Asari) 120 g, ground finely and compressed into compound halloysite tablets, each tablet 0.34 g. Oral administration, 3–5 tablets per dose, three times daily, for 30 days as one course. A total of 35 cases treated: 15 cured, 18 effective, 2 ineffective, with a total effective rate of 94.3%.
