[Overview] This herb is also known as Yangzhizhu Flower, Jingyang Flower, Laohu Flower, and Yellow Azalea Flower. It is the flower of Rhododendron molle G.Don, a plant of the Ericaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Hunan, Henan provinces, with Sichuan and Guizhou also producing it. The flowers are harvested in early spring when they first bloom, then dried in the shade or sun-dried.

[Properties] It has a pungent taste, warm nature, and is highly toxic. It enters the liver meridian.

[Actions] Dispels wind and eliminates dampness, disperses blood stasis and relieves pain, kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and traumatic swelling and pain. For wind-cold painful obstruction, classical formulas use this herb in pill or powder form; for pain caused by wind-phlegm migrating pain, it can be combined with Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema); for hemicrania (one-sided headache), it can be used alone or combined with wind-dispelling herbs, administered orally or applied externally. Used alone or combined with Chuan Wu (Aconitum) and Cao Wu (Aconitum kusnezoffii), it can serve as an anesthetic and analgesic. Modern preparations include injectable solutions used for auricular and intramuscular injection, both producing anesthetic and analgesic effects.
2. Used for stubborn skin tinea, itching, and alopecia sores. Fresh flowers are crushed and applied topically to affected areas; for alopecia and damp sores, dry flowers can be ground into powder and mixed with sesame oil for topical application; for leprosy, it can be combined with Da Feng Zi and Cao Wu.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: powder 0.3–0.6 g; decoction 0.3–0.6 g; or incorporated into pills, powders, or infused in alcohol. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically, or fresh material crushed and applied.

1. Chemical constituents: The flower contains rhodotoxin (rhododendron toxin I), azaleatin, rhododendrin III, japonin III, barlin toxin, rhodotoxin III, and laurel terpene alcohol.

Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Flos Rhododendri Mollis show significant analgesic effects in experimental animals but have a low therapeutic index and narrow safety margin; alcoholic extracts administered intravenously or into the lateral ventricle in anesthetized rabbits produce significant hypotensive effects, possibly mediated via central mechanisms; in vitro, the decoction exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, and Streptococcus beta-hemolyticus; it also has central emetic effects.
