[Overview] This herb is also known as Purple-back Tiankuizi, Tiankui Root, and One Grain Golden Pill. It is the tuberous root of Semiaquilegia adoxoides (DC.) Makino, a plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It is mainly produced in Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Guizhou, and Anhui provinces. The tubers are harvested in summer, with residual leaves and fibrous roots removed, then cleaned and sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and bitter; nature: cold. Enters the Liver, Stomach, and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, reduces swelling and dissipates nodules, promotes urination and unblocks strangury.

[Applications]
1. Used for heat toxin sores and ulcers, mastitis; applied topically as a crushed poultice alone or decocted together with Wild Chrysanthemum, Dandelion, Viola yedoensis, etc., as in the formula Wuwei Xiaodu Yin (Five-Ingredient Detoxifying Drink).
2. Used for scrofula; often combined with Zhejiang Fritillaria (Zhe Beimu), Scrophularia (Xuan Shen), and Prunella (Xiakucao).
3. Used for heat strangury and sandy strangury; used alone or combined with Dianthus (Bian Xu) and Plantain Seed (Che Qian Zi).
Additionally, in recent years it has been frequently used in treating liver cancer, breast cancer, and malignant lymphoma, often combined with Hedyotis diffusa (Bai Hua She She Cao) and Paris polyphylla (Chong Lou).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 9–15 g; powdered 1.5–3 g; or soaked in alcohol.

1. Chemical constituents include alkaloids, lactones, coumarins, phenolic compounds, amino acids, etc.
2. Clinical report on mastitis: Tiankuizi is washed and crushed, then wrapped in sterile cotton gauze sized to fit into the nostril. For left breast mastitis, insert into the right nostril; for right breast mastitis, insert into the left nostril; change every 5–6 hours. Effects observed within 24 hours, cured in 3–4 days.
