[Overview] This herb is also known as Jin Fo Cao, Bai Zhi Hu, Xuan Fu Geng, and Mao Chai Hu. It is the aerial part of Inula linariifolia Turcz. or Inula japonica Thunb., plants of the Asteraceae family used for cough relief. It is mainly produced in Henan, Jiangsu, Hebei, Zhejiang, Anhui, and other regions. The herb is harvested in summer and autumn, impurities are removed, and then it is sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter, pungent, salty in taste; warm in nature. Enters the Lung and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Dispel wind and disseminate the Lung qi, descend qi and resolve phlegm, activate blood circulation and reduce swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for external wind-cold invasion with cough and headache, or phlegm-fluid obstructing the Lung causing chest fullness and cough with abundant phlegm and asthma. For external wind-cold cough with expectoration and nasal congestion with heavy voice, it can be combined with Ephedra (Ma Huang), Schizonepeta (Jing Jie), fresh ginger, etc.; for external wind-cold headache, combined with Asarum (Xi Xin), Vitex (Man Jing Zi), fresh ginger, etc.; for cough, asthma, and chest tightness with phlegm, it can be combined with Peucedanum (Qian Hu), Pinellia (Ban Xia), Fructus Aurantii (Zhi Ke), or combined with Lepidium (Ting Li Zi), etc.
2. Used for belching and vomiting, combined with Pinellia (Ban Xia), Citrus peel (Chen Pi), substituted hematite (Dai Zhe Shi), etc. If due to spleen and stomach deficiency cold, also combined with Codonopsis (Dang Shen), Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), etc.
3. Used for wind-damp pain and carbuncle swelling and pain. For the former, combined with Angelica pubescens (Du Huo), Clematis (Wei Ling Xian), etc.; for the latter, combined with Lonicera japonica (Jin Yin Hua), Viola yedoensis (Zi Hua Di Ding), etc.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or use fresh herb to crush and extract juice. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or decocted for washing.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in yin-deficiency chronic cough and warm-dry cough.
