[Overview] This product is also known as Hetaoren, Walnut Kernel, Xiaman, and Hetaorang. It is the seed kernel of Juglans regia L. of the Juglandaceae family. It is produced in most parts of China, with Hebei having the largest output and Fenyang in Shanxi producing the best quality. The fruit is harvested in autumn when mature, the fleshy pericarp is removed and dried in the sun, then the shell and woody septum are removed.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Kidney, Lung, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies the Kidney and benefits essence, warms the Lung and calms asthma, moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels.
[Applications]
1. Used for Kidney Qi deficiency presenting as lumbar pain and weakness of the legs, dizziness and fatigue, frequent urination and seminal emission, and diabetes. For Kidney deficiency with lumbar pain and weakness of the legs, a heavy dragging sensation in the lumbar region making sitting and standing difficult, often combined with Eucommia and Psoralea, as in Qing’e Wan (青娥丸). If accompanied by aversion to cold and cold limbs indicating Kidney Yang deficiency, often combined with Aconite and Cinnamon bark. For dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and weakness of the waist, can be combined with Lycium fruit and Polygonum multiflorum. For lower origin deficiency cold causing frequent urination, incontinence, and seminal emission, often combined with Cuscuta and Rosa laevigata. For Kidney deficiency diabetes, urinary difficulty, dry lips and mouth, can be combined with Poria and Aconite.
2. Used for cough and asthma due to Lung and Kidney deficiency. For chronic cough due to Lung deficiency, often combined with Ginseng, Apricot kernel, Farfara flower, and Aster root, as in Ren Shen Hu Tao Tang (人参胡桃汤). If both Lung and Kidney are deficient with loss of Qi containment, presenting with shortness of breath, rapid breathing, inability to lie flat, fatigue, spontaneous sweating, often combined with Ginseng, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Gecko.
3. Used for constipation due to Qi deficiency in the elderly and blood and fluid deficiency postpartum causing dry intestines. Used alone or combined with Cannabis seed and Cistanche.
4. Used for stranguria and insufficient lactation. For Kidney deficiency with damp-heat causing stone stranguria with short urination, dribbling, and painful urination, often combined with Dianthus and Juncus effusus. For postpartum insufficient lactation and breast distension and pain, combined with Pangolin powder and yellow wine, as in Hetaosan (胡桃散).
5. Used externally for traumatic injuries, ulcers, carbuncles, and eczema. For traumatic swelling and pain, can be pounded and taken with wine; for carbuncles and boils, combined with Sophora flower powder and taken with wine; for scrofula sores, use whole walnut fruit burned to preserve properties and pine resin for external application.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 6–9 g; chewed alone 10–30 g; or used in pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground to powder and applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with fire blazing, phlegm-heat internal accumulation, and loose stools or diarrhea. Do not use with strong tea.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The seed contains crude protein, with soluble proteins mainly composed of glutamic acid, followed by arginine and aspartic acid. Crude lipids include triglycerides, sterol esters, and free fatty acids; fatty acids are mainly linoleic acid and oleic acid; triglycerides mainly contain linolenic acid; the unsaponifiable fraction of sterol esters is mainly β-sitosterol. The fruit also contains 1,4-naphthoquinone, juglone, and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, and copper.
2. Pharmacological effects: Juglone in walnut fruit can prolong survival rate of mice with ascitic liver cancer by up to 95%, inhibit S180 sarcoma solid tumors by 50%, and inhibit DNA synthesis in mouse liver cancer cells in vitro; walnut oil can affect cholesterol synthesis and oxidation in the body.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Type 1 and 2 diabetes: Use 12 walnuts, cracked, with hard shell and septum removed, add 750 ml water, simmer gently for 1 hour to 300 ml, remove shells and septum. Divide decoction and walnut meat into 3 portions, take one portion half an hour before meals, 3 times daily. Total 84 cases treated, overall effective rate 84.5%. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1993, 25(7):23] (2) Chronic suppurative otitis media: Use 10 walnuts, shelled, kernel ground, wrapped in cloth and pressed to extract walnut oil. Take 10 ml oil, add 2 g finely ground borneol, mix evenly to make ear drops. After disinfecting with hydrogen peroxide, instill 5–7 drops, plug ear with cotton ball. Once daily for 1 week per course, with obvious efficacy. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, 9(1):48] (3) Dentin hypersensitivity: Use mung bean-sized cotton ball dipped in walnut oil (prepared as above), repeatedly apply to sensitive area for 5–6 minutes. Total 89 cases with 278 affected teeth treated, 254 teeth cured, 19 improved, 5 ineffective. [Chinese Journal of Stomatology, 1983, 18(1):62]
