[Overview] This herb is also known as Hushi, Guishi, and Northern Hushi. It is the mature fruit of Carpesium abrotanoides L., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Guizhou, and other regions, also called “Northern Hushi.” The aerial parts are harvested when the fruit matures in autumn, dried in the sun, then the fruits are separated and impurities removed.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, neutral in nature, with slight toxicity. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Expels parasites and reduces accumulation.

[Applications] Used for various intestinal parasitic infections including roundworm, tapeworm, pinworm, and hookworm. It can be used alone as a powder or made into honey pills for oral administration. When combined with Areca (Binglang), Artemisia (Wuti), Quisqualis (Shijunzi), and Melia bark (Kuliampi), its antiparasitic effect is enhanced. For abdominal pain due to parasitic accumulation with constipation and a firm pulse, it is combined with Rhubarb (Dahuang) and Black Charcoal (Heichou). For intermittent abdominal pain with cold limbs, it is combined with Aconite (Fuzi), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Aucklandia (Muxiang), Areca (Binglang), and Rhubarb (Dahuang), as in the formula Jixiao Wan (集效丸).

Additionally, Fructus Carpesii decocted with rice and used as a mouth rinse can treat dental caries pain; decocted with Sichuan pepper (Huajiao), alum (Baifan), and Dictamnus root bark (Baixianpi) for fumigation and sitz baths can treat pinworm-induced anal itching and vaginal trichomoniasis.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents include carpesiolide, carpesium lactone ketone, triacontane, n-hexanoic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, hentriacontane, β-sitosterol, etc. Seeds contain hexacosanol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Carpesiolide exhibits significant central nervous system inhibitory effects in animals, manifested as limb muscle relaxation and anesthesia, and can antagonize convulsions induced by nicotine (coramine) and strychnine.
