[Overview] This herb is also known as Sangtiao. It is the tender twig of Morus alba L., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is produced in most parts of China, mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, Hebei, Sichuan, and other regions. It is harvested in late spring to early summer, leaves are removed, then it is sun-dried or cut into sections or oblique slices while fresh and then sun-dried.

[Properties] Slightly bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Dispels wind-dampness, unblocks the meridians, benefits the joints, promotes the movement of water qi.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction and limb contracture, joint pain. Treats wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome, whether acute or chronic, wind-cold or wind-heat type, especially suitable for wind-damp-heat painful obstruction and shoulder and arm pain. Can be used alone by decocting into a paste for oral administration. For predominant cold symptoms, combine with Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma); for predominant heat symptoms, combine with Luo Shi Teng (Celastrus orbiculatus Caulis), Ren Si Dong Teng (Periploca forrestii Caulis).
2. Used for stroke sequelae with hemiplegia, facial paralysis, limb numbness; can be combined with Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gui Zhi, Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobi Caulis). For hypertension accompanied by limb numbness, combine with Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Di Long (Pheretima). Additionally, Sangzhi combined with Liu Zhi (Salicis Ramulus), Huai Zhi (Sophorae Flos), Tao Zhi (Persicae Ramulus) decocted for external washing can treat generalized wind itching, dry skin, and vitiligo. Ashes of Sangzhi mixed with juice and boiled with red adzuki beans, taken on an empty stomach, can treat generalized edema.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for washing.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Sangzhi contains tannins, various sugars; the stem contains flavonoid components.
2. Pharmacological effects: The bark of Sangzhi can increase chloride excretion in urine, exhibiting diuretic effects; it has strong anti-inflammatory activity, can enhance lymphocyte transformation rate, and has immune-enhancing effects.
3. Clinical reports: Type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus: A clinical observation was conducted on 40 patients with type 2 diabetes using pure Chinese herbal preparation Sangzhi granules, with a control group of 40 patients treated with the western drug Baitangping. After 2 months of treatment, the total effective rate of the Sangzhi granule group was 95%, and that of the Baitangping group was 80%, with no significant difference between groups (P>0.05). The Sangzhi granule group showed significant improvement before and after treatment (P<0.01), and was superior to the Baitangping group in symptom improvement and lipid lowering.
