[Overview] This herb is also known as Huaruishi or Dolomite. It is a metamorphic rock type, serpentine marble. It is produced in Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, Sichuan, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round. After excavation, impurities are knocked off, and small pieces with pale yellow or yellow-green halos are selected for medicinal use.

[Properties] Taste: sour and astringent; nature: neutral. Enters the liver meridian.

[Actions] Resolves blood stasis and stops bleeding.

[Applications] Used for bleeding syndromes with blood stasis such as hematemesis, hemoptysis, epistaxis, hematochezia, and traumatic bleeding. For persistent hematemesis, Ophicalcite can be calcined, ground into a fine powder, and taken with child urine; formula example: Huaruishi Powder (花蕊石散). It can also be combined with Panax notoginseng (Sanqi), substituted hematite (Daizheshi), and purple pearl (Zizhu) for joint use. For sudden severe hemoptysis, it is often combined with Biota leaf (Ce Bai Ye), lotus rhizome node (Ou Jie), and raw Rehmannia root (Sheng Dihuang). For recurrent hemoptysis, it can be used with Bletilla (Bai Ji) and charred blood residue (Xue Yu Tan); formula example: Huaruishi Bai Ji Powder (花蕊石白及散). For cough with blood, epistaxis, and bleeding from the two lower orifices, it can be combined with Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) and charred blood residue (Xue Yu) ground together; formula example: Huaxue Dan (化血丹). [Dosage and Administration] Internal use: powder, 4.5–9 g. External use: appropriate amount of powder applied topically.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include calcium and magnesium carbonates, mixed with small amounts of iron salts, aluminum salts, and elements such as zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, cadmium, lead, as well as small amounts of acid-soluble substances.
2. Pharmacological effects include anticonvulsant activity superior to dragon bone and dragon teeth; it can shorten coagulation time in normal mice.
3. Clinical reports: (1) For gastrointestinal bleeding such as stomach and duodenal bleeding, pulmonary tuberculosis hemoptysis, and bronchial hemoptysis: Ophicalcite is calcined red and translucent in a smokeless furnace, cooled, powdered, and sifted through a 120-mesh sieve until no gritty sensation is felt by hand or taste. Dosage: 4–8 g, three times daily. In 224 cases treated, the total effective rate was 70%, with the best effect on gastrointestinal bleeding reaching 98.1%.
