[Overview] This herb is also known as White Sandalwood, Sandalwood, and True Sandalwood. It is the heartwood of the trunk of Santalum album L., a plant of the Santalaceae family. It is mainly produced in India and Indonesia, and has been introduced in Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan, and Yunnan provinces of China. Harvested in summer, the wood is cut into sections, the pale sapwood is removed leaving the heartwood, which is then sun-dried or oven-dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen, stomach, heart, and lung meridians.
[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and warms the middle burner; stimulates appetite and relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for stomach pain due to cold stagnation of qi, chest pain, and cold hernia abdominal pain. Treats cold pain in the epigastrium, fullness with poor appetite, and vomiting of clear fluids. Can be combined with Chenpi (Citrus peel), dried ginger, clove, etc., as in the formula Wuxin Kuange Tang (Five-Spice Decoction to Relax the Diaphragm). For stomach or chest pain caused by blood stasis and qi stagnation, it is combined with Danshen (Salvia) and Sha Ren (Amomum), as in Danshen Yin. Clinically, this herb is combined with Suhe Xiang (Styrax), Qingmuxiang (Aquilaria), and Ruxiang (Frankincense) in pill form for coronary heart disease angina pectoris. For cold hernia abdominal pain, it is often combined with Wu Yao (Lindera) and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis).
2. Used for cholera with vomiting and food obstruction. Treats cold-damp cholera with abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea; can be combined with Gao Liang Jiang (Alpinia) and Cao Dou Kou (Alpinia katsumadai), as in Leng Xiang Tang (Cold Fragrance Decoction). For stomach retention of fluids causing epigastric fullness and vomiting, it can be combined with Mu Xiang (Aucklandia) and Sha Ren. For food obstruction in the lungs causing inability to eat, it can be combined with Fu Ling (Poria) and Ju Hong (Tangerine peel).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 2–5 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, juice applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire excess.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The heartwood contains volatile oils, whose main components are sesquiterpenes, α- and β-santalol. It also contains santene, α- and β-santalene, santalenone, santalenol, epi-β-santalene, 12,13-dihydro-α-santalol, 12,13-dihydro-β-santalol, α- and β-curcumene, β-acoradiene, formic acid, and santalic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: α- and β-santalol exhibit strong antibacterial activity; sandalwood oil has diuretic effects. [8]
