[Overview] This item is also known as Stone Sulfur, Yellow Sulfur Sand, Sulfur Flower, Sulfur Powder. It is a natural mineral element belonging to the sulfur family, natural sulfur (Sulfur) obtained after heating, melting, and removing impurities into block form; or crystalline form obtained by sublimation refining of sulfur-containing substances or sulfur-containing minerals. Mainly produced in Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Henan, Shanxi; also produced in Jiangsu, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Taiwan, and other places. It can be harvested year-round. After digging natural sulfur, it is heated and melted to remove impurities or processed from sulfur-containing minerals.

[Properties] Sour taste, warm nature, toxic. Enters the Kidney, Spleen, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Externally used to detoxify, kill parasites, and heal sores; internally used to supplement fire, assist yang, and relieve constipation.

[Applications]
1. Used for scabies, stubborn tinea, damp toxin sores, and yin sores. For scabies, sulfur can be externally applied with walnut oil and a small amount of mercury, as in the formula Chou Ling Dan (臭灵丹); for stubborn tinea, it can be ground together with weathered lime, lead oxide, and talcum powder, as in the formula Ru Sheng San (如圣散); for itching damp sores in the genital area, sulfur powder can be applied alone or combined with Cnidium monnieri (She Chuang Zi) and alum; for yang deficiency cold-congealed yin sores and cold fistulas, it can be made into a powder with buckwheat for external use.
2. Used for kidney yang deficiency, diminished life gate fire causing impotence, spermatorrhea, frequent urination with leukorrhea, cold and painful lumbar and knees, deficiency asthma, and cold wheezing. For impotence, spermatorrhea, frequent urination with leukorrhea, and cold lumbar and knees, it is often combined with deer antler, Psoralea corylifolia (Bu Gu Zhi), or Aconitum (Fu Zi); for true yang deficiency, lower source deficiency cold, unstable yang qi, and cold asthma caused by yin qi rebellion, it can be combined with Aconitum and cinnamon, as in the formula Hei Xi Dan (黑锡丹).
3. Used for lower source deficiency cold, spleen and stomach deficiency cold causing diarrhea or constipation. For chronic deficiency cold diarrhea, it can be combined with ginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu), Psoralea corylifolia, and clove; for elderly deficiency cold constipation, it can be combined with Pinellia (Ban Xia), as in the formula Ban Liu Wan (半硫丸).

[Dosage and Administration] External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and sprinkled; or mixed with oil and applied; or burned to produce smoke for fumigation. Internal use: 1.5–3 g, processed and incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] This item is very hot and toxic; excessive or long-term use is not recommended to avoid arsenic poisoning. Contraindicated in patients with yin deficiency and fire excess and in pregnant women.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly contain sulfur, with impurities such as arsenic and selenium.
2. Pharmacological actions: This item has effects of dissolving keratin, softening skin, killing scabies mites and other skin parasites, and antibacterial and antifungal effects; after oral administration, part of it can form sulfur compounds in the intestine that inhibit hydrogen and stimulate intestinal wall peristalsis, producing a laxative effect; appropriate doses of sulfur have therapeutic effects on pruritus and inflammation in animal experiments, reducing infiltration of inflammatory cells in various levels of bronchial chronic inflammation, decreasing the number of goblet cells in bronchial mucosa to varying degrees, and promoting increased bronchial secretion; it also significantly enhances the central inhibitory effects of chlorpromazine and thiopental sodium.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Rosacea: Mix Dian Dao San (equal parts sulfur and rhubarb, ground into fine powder), take 5 g, place in a wine cup, add an appropriate amount of cold water to make a paste. Before sleep every night, apply to the nose with a brush; wash off the next morning when washing the face. Once nightly, one course is 2 weeks, generally requiring 2–3 courses. Treated 20 cases: 10 cured, 7 markedly effective, 2 improved, 1 ineffective. [Jilin Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983, (4):37] 2. Tinea versicolor: Take appropriate amounts of sulfur and fresh ginger; grind sulfur into powder; slice ginger diagonally, first rub one side on the affected area until warm, then dip the other side in a small amount of sulfur powder and rub the affected area 3–4 times until the area is light red, then apply a thin layer of sulfur powder. Apply 2–3 times daily; avoid washing after application. Treated 5 cases, all cured. [Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, 7(4):32] 3. Scabies: Use 100 g sulfur powder dissolved in 2000 ml boiling water; after about 15 minutes, dip a towel in the solution and repeatedly rub the affected area. Once nightly, used continuously for multiple days. Treated 38 cases: 35 cured after 3 rubbings, 2 cured after 5 rubbings, 1 cured after 6 rubbings. Follow-up for half a year showed no relapse.
