[Overview] This herb is also known as Lian Shi, Jin Ling Zi, and Chuan Lian Shi. It is the mature fruit of the plant Melia toosendan Sieb. et Zucc. of the Meliaceae family. It is produced in Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. The fruit is harvested in winter when mature, impurities are removed, and then it is sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the Liver, Stomach, and Small Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Soothes the Liver and regulates Qi, clears heat and relieves pain, kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used for pain in the chest, epigastrium, and hypochondrium caused by Liver Qi stagnation; often used together with Corydalis (Yan Hu Suo), as in the formula Jin Ling Zi San (金铃子散). For prolonged pain with Liver Qi turning into fire and injury to Yin and blood, it can be combined with Rehmannia (Sheng Di), Angelica (Dang Gui), and Lycium (Gou Qi Zi), as in the formula Yi Guan Jian (一贯煎).
2. Used for hernia pain; often combined with Lindera (Wu Yao), Citrus seed (Ju He), and Green Tangerine Peel (Qing Pi). For hernia with pronounced cold and dampness, combined with Fennel (Xiao Hui Xiang), Evodia (Wu Zhu Yu), and Aucklandia (Mu Xiang), as in Dao Qi Tang (导气汤). If hernia masses cause Yin injury, this herb can be added to Yin-nourishing formulas.
3. Used for abdominal pain due to parasitic accumulation; combined with Quisqualis (Shi Jun Zi), Artemisia (Wu Ti), and Fleabane (He Shi). For pediatric pinworm causing anal itching, it can be combined with fresh Mugwort leaf decoction for fumigation and washing of the anus.
Additionally, powdered Fructus Meliae Toosendan mixed with oil to form an ointment can be applied topically to treat tinea capitis. After decoction, fumigation followed by soaking and washing with the medicinal liquid can treat chilblains.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and mixed for topical application or decoction for fumigation and washing. Stir-fried Fructus Meliae Toosendan has stronger Qi-regulating and pain-relieving effects; raw use is better for treating tinea and killing parasites.

[Cautions] This herb should not be used in excessive amounts or for prolonged periods to avoid side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and even death. It is contraindicated in patients with Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold and loose stools.

1. Chemical constituents include toosendanin, melianone, toosendanin alcohol, as well as fatty oils, resins, and tannins.

Pharmacological actions: Toosendanin has a significant paralytic effect on pig roundworms; Fructus Meliae Toosendan relaxes the Oddi sphincter, contracts the gallbladder, and promotes bile secretion; it inhibits skin fungi and Staphylococcus aureus; it also exhibits anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects.
